Making a List and Checking It Twice...

As Christmas is fast approaching, I'm constantly thinking about what still needs to be done before the family events. Unfortunately, the list keep growing instead of shrinking.

To Do:

Finish making 2 gifts (actually got one done tonight, just have to do the second one)
Wrap gifts (which involves finding boxes for odd shaped gifts, printing labels, and then finally wrapping the gifts.)
Shopping for food supplies for Bell Christmas at Steinbach.
Figure out how I'm getting to Rygiel Christmas at Mitch and Carmen's.
Packing up gifts for Rygiel Christmas and Bell Christmas, and make sure I don't put something in the wrong bag.
Make sure there is gas in the car for driving out to Steinbach and back three days in a row.
...and last but not least, have fun spending time with family.

As least I'll time to recuperate after all the fun is over, since I'm still looking for a job.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Reflections on my 28th Year

Since my birthday is coming up soon (8 days to be exact), I've been thinking back on the past year and how many changes occurred over the past 365 days.

Getting married in January, and moving into Grant's apartment was a big adjustment, but we are getting settled into a routine, and one of these days, hopefully, I will finally get the apartment organized.

In February, I had my Gall Bladder taken out. I had a couple of attacks over the past couple of years, and thought that it was probably a good idea. One thing that I haven't done a good job at since the surgery is changing the way that I eat. I'm hoping to work on that this next year.

At the end of March, I left my job at Lakeview to take a job with a friend from church who wanted me to be the Office Manager for the plumbing and heating company that he had purchased. Unfortunately, the job didn't work out, and I was laid off at the end of September.

In July, we had a Taylor family reunion at Clearview Christian Camp at Kenosee Lake, SK. It had been quite a few years since all the aunts, uncles and cousins had been together at the same time. It was a great weekend of visiting and catching up. We were only missing one family memeber who wasn't able to travel due to health reasons. I hope that we can have more of these reunions over the years.

September saw Grant and I heading to Edmonton for our honeymoon (I know we got married in Janaury, but we couldn't take the time off then to have our honeymoon). We spent three days at West Edmonton Mall taking in the Water Park, Sea Lion Show, Black Light Mini Golf and 10 Pin Bowling. We also playing two nights of Buzztime Trivia at one of the many trivia locations in Edmonton.

The highlight for me of our time at West Edmonton Mall was during the Sea Lion Show, when I was selected to help out in the show. After, I was able to get my picture taken with one of the sea lions, and he snuck a kiss in.

Not much has happened since returning from Edmonton, except for me job hunting. I haven't been successful yet in finding a job, but I'm hoping that something will come up soon.

Frustrated, but working on it

I'm still feeling frustrated about things, but I've decided that it's better to set 3 small(ish) goals for myself, and try to get the apartment more organized this way.

Todays goals are:

1. Clean off coffee table and organize everything that came off of it. I don't have a before picture of what it looked like, but here is a picture of the result.

2. Dishes - unfortunately, I haven't been good about keeping up with dishes everyday, so there are quite a few that need to be washed (though Grant did up lots of them on Monday).

3. Enter receipts into Microsoft Money - I want to a better idea of where my money is being spent, so I'm going to start using Microsoft Money to track spending (I can use multiple categories for one receipt with this program). Hopefully this will help me come up with a better budget and see where changes can be made.

I'm going to try and post my goals on a regular basis so that I can have some accountability.

Date Night

This past weekend was a very busy weekend, but at the same time was very relaxing. Grant and I went to play Trivia at lunch (the bar where we play was hosting a UFC night on Saturday, so playing Trivia isn’t enjoyable on those nights). We left there about 4 and came home and packed our suitcase. Grant had won the “Romantic Package” at my work Christmas party, and in there was a gift certificate for a night at the Inn At the Forks. We decided that since we weren’t playing the evening Trivia games, that we would have a date night and use the certificate before it expired. We checked into the hotel about 5 and then got ready for the evening. We wondered around the Forks Market for awhile. There are a lot of nice shops there. I did some window shopping (Grant was very patient with me, as he doesn’t like shopping). We then went to Muddy Waters BBQ for supper. It was very delicious. We were very full by the time we left. We wandered around the Forks again for a bit. There was a “busker” outside the Johnston Terminal. He did painting entirely with spray paint. It was quite amazing to see the process, and to also see the end product. I didn’t take any pictures because I didn’t know if I should. We then headed back to the hotel for the evening and relaxed.

Sunday, we had been invited to join Grant’s cousins, Aunt and Mother at the cabin they were renting at Grand Marais. They were going to be checking in around 3 and told us to come by about 5, so we headed to Grand Beach for a while first. It was a blast. The weather was basically perfect for a beach day. It wasn’t too hot, too cold, or cloudy. We both ended up with sunburns though. I had made a point of buying sunscreen at WalMart before we left the city, but it ended up in the bottom of the beach bag and I had problems finding it and gave up. We spent about 3 hours at the beach and then headed to Grand Marais and the cabin.

We headed out as a group to find supper, and found a great little food stand just across the street from where the cabin was. Most of us tried the bison burger and it was great. After supper, Grant and I went for a walk around Grand Marais with Glen, Gloria and Keya (their dog). It was a very nice, slow, relaxing walk. On the homestretch, we managed to find an ice cream stand, where we got some ice cream cones (Grant had a milkshake), and went back to the cabin to play cards.

We are both looking forward to the Taylor family reunion this weekend at Kenosee. Unfortunately, Grant wasn’t able to get Friday night off, so I’ll be heading out to camp with Charlotte and Grant will drive out on Saturday morning to join all of us. Then we will head home together on Sunday.

I’m sure I’ll have lots more to post next week.

I Give Up

You'll notice that I've taken my 101 in 1001 list off of my blog. I've made the decision not to continue with the list at this time. I was beginning to feel very overwhelmed by some of the items on my list, and felt that they were ones that would never get completed. Some of the items on my list did get completed, but they were the simple ones that I put on there.

Instead, what I'm going to try to do is to set daily and weekly goals for myself. If I get a chance, I'll post them on here at the beginning of the week, and report back as to how they went.

I'm still feeling very frustrated about everything. Sometimes I just don't know what to do.

4 of 52 (a couple of days late)

I had purposely put off writing this week's update, cause I knew I had an Eye Specialist appointment on Monday, and figured I would do my post on Monday night. But I spend most of Monday night talking to my sisters and my parents to let them know how the appointment went. Then last night, I vegged in front of the TV all night, so I didn't get it done last night either.

Last week went pretty good, except for the computer at work. It started acting up again on Monday, and by about noon, it had crashed (AGAIN). So my boss took it into the shop, and we didn't get it back until Thursday morning. It worked OK for about an hour until I tried to install the printer, and then it crashed again, so back to the shop it went. This time while it was in the shop, they discoved that it was a defect in the hard drive, and they replaced the computer for free (we only purchased it at the end of March). So that was stressful to watch all my work pile up, and not be able to do any of it.

As I mentioned earlier in my post, I had an Eye Specialist appointment on monday. It was discoved quite a few years ago that my IOP pressures were higher than then they should be. At that time, I was put on glaucoma drops (I don't have glaucoma, but that is what they use to get the pressures down). I was on the drops for a couple of years, though I'm horrible at remembering to put them in. After a while, the pressures went down (even though I had forgotten to put the drops in for quite a while), so I went off of the drops. Back in March of this year, I got my eyes checked, and the pressures were back up again (even higher than they were before), so I was refered to an Eye Specialist again. I was again put on glaucoma drops, but I kept forgetting to put them in. When I went for my follow up on Monday, the pressures were still as high as they had been the previous appointment. The specialist made the suggestion that I get SLT done, which has an 70 - 80% success rate, and then I won't have to worry about remembering to put drops in everyday. So, I get my right eye done on July 21 and my left eye done on August 13.

That's about all that is new here.

Frustration

Disclaimer: This post is long, and a vent. Read at your own discretion.

Lately, I have found myself to be very frustrated. I've always had an idea in my head of what a married woman should be like. Clean home, good cook, helpful, looks well kept, takes delicious food to gatherings, prepared for events (birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, weddings, etc.) I'm none of those things.

My house (apartment) is a mess, I don't know how to cook, I always wear my hair in a ponytail and never wear makeup, I buy chips or something else unhealthy for gatherings (at the last minute - usually on the way there, while running late), and do any shopping for events at the last minute or forget all together.

I want to be the perfect wife. I want my husband to be happy when he is at home and not having to look at what I haven't gotten done. I want to be a good cook, and eat healthy. We would both benefit from that. I want to feel good about the way I look. I look at people and think "why can't I look like that?"

I don't want to feel bad because all I bring to a potluck is chips or something like that. I want people to rave over the food I brought, and seek me out for the recipe because it is so good. I want to be better prepared for any event, whether it be just sending a card or having a gift wrapped and ready to go. I don't like last minute shopping, not knowing what I'm going to buy and then having to try to wrap it in the parking lot hoping no one will notice how unprepared I am.

Feeling this way doesn't make me happy. I look at everything that needs to be done, and don't know where to start, so I don't do anything. I make up excuses: I'm too tired, my back hurts, I'm in pain, or I want to watch a show on TV. With all these excuses, I end up sitting on the couch all night watching TV and playing on the computer, before going to bed way too late and end up feeling so tired the next day because I didn't get enough sleep.

I'm also frustrated because I really want to walk to 10K at the Manitoba Marathon this year. It`s only 3 weeks away (June 21). Most training schedules that I`ve found require weeks of training (the shortest I`ve found is 8 weeks). There is no way I can even think I`ll be ready. Especially with the way my ankles, knees and hips are. This is yet another thing I`ll regret not being prepared for.

I want to get in shape. I hate feeling out of breath from walking a short distance. I hate not being able to join in on fun activities because I`m afraid someone will make fun of how I look.

I`m tired of feeling like a failure.

I need to do better, and need a plan to stop the cycle.

My plan:

-write down the shows I want to watch each night, and only watch 2 hours worth of TV (anything else can be recorded for another night)
-only 1 hour of computer time at home each night (that should be plenty of time to check email, Facebook and other sites I check). After that hour is up music can be played from the computer, but that`s it.
-when it is nice out, walk home from work (walk along bus route, so if I need to catch a bus I can)
-I will get the apartment clean by July 1, 2009. I will get caught up on laundry (including having it put away) by the same date.
-after this, I will create a weekly cleaning schedule and will stick to it
-I will learn how to cook. I have to realize that not everything will turn out the first time, but I can try again.
-I need to create a meal plan. Using the flyer`s, every saturday I will create the menu for the week, and only get what is needed (this should help bring down the cost of groceries as well) and be able to prepare better for gatherings where food is to be brought.
-one of my goals on my 101 in 1001 was to send out cards to family for birthdays and anniversaries. I will get my master list created by July 1, 2009 and start sending out cards for July events.

I`m hoping all these choices will help me to feel better about myself and about how I feel as a wife. It is not fair to my husband for me to be like that.

Sorry for the pity party, but I needed to write this down.

3 of 52

I'm sitting here on the couch with Grant watching our wedding video, and realized that I hadn't done this week's blog post yet.

This week was uneventful. We spent a quiet Victoria Day holiday at home, until Grant went to work for the evening (he doesn't get holidays off if they fall Monday - Friday).

I'm still getting everything organized at work. I'm able to start to get a routine going, which will make things much easier once we get extremely busy in the summer with pool heaters.

Saturday night, I had a sleep over at the hospital. There was some concern that I might have sleep apnea, so I had a sleep study. I have to wait until July for the official results, but based on what the technician was saying as she was unhooking all the wires this morning, everything looked ok. That is a relief.

There's not much more to say, so I'll sign off for now.

I'll try to do an update on my goals in the next couple of days.

2 of 52

It's very late, but I know I have to do this week's update, so here it is.

It has been a good week.

On Monday, I was finally able to move into the office at work. It's great to be able to get everything set up the way that I want it, and know that I'm not going to have to move it again right away.

Tuesday was a normal day at work, and then I went to trivia in the evening. We did alright in the games.

On Wednesday, we started having computer issues at work, which resulted in the computer going into the shop to get downgraded to XP from Vista. We didn't get it back until Thursday.

I spent Thursday putting the programs back onto the computer, and getting them to work. I was having firewall issues and those issues actually took until Friday morning to figure out, but I was very glad when I did, since I was already 3 days behind in my work.

We had Mom, Dad and Charlotte here on Saturday. Shortly after Mom and Dad arrived, Dad, Charlotte and I headed off to get the cars switched over to Manitoba plates from the Saskatchewan ones. It took quite awhile to get everything figured out, but eventually we did and now the car has Manitoba plates.

I made supper and we played a game before Mom and Dad headed out to Selena and Curtis's to sleep (since we don't have a spare room here)

On Sunday, we headed out to Selena and Curtis's for a family day and to also be there for their housewarming. It's great being together with family and to create memories and have lots of laughs (and there were lots of laughs).

I'm planning on walking the 10K at the Manitoba Marathon on June 21, so starting this week, I am going to buy a new pair of runners, and start on training for that.

Sorry I don`t have any pictures to post, but we are still getting used to having a camera, and keep forgetting to use it, or to make sure we take it with us when we are going somewhere.

1 of 52 (Again!)

I’ve been told that I need to update my blog (it has been over 3 months since I last wrote anything, so I guess it is time). I guess I'll have to start my numbering back at the beginning as well.

I’ve been slowly settling into the apartment since the wedding. I am finding it hard to find a place for everything, (which probably means I have too much stuff) since there isn’t much storage space. I may have to go buy some extra storage supplies.

Shortly after the wedding, I had an appointment with a General Surgeon regarding my gall bladder. (I had an attack back in November that was painful enough to send me to the ER instead of being at work.) His suggestion was to go ahead and take out my gall bladder, so we booked a surgery date of February 11. He was able to do the surgery lapriscopially (with the camera and stuff), which considerably cut down on how long it took me to recover.

Mom and Dad came to visit on the February long weekend, and while they were here, they got us part of our Wedding gift from them. Since the apartment doesn’t have much storage space, they got us a 6 foot stand alone pantry. After it was assembled, Mom helped (closer to Mom did everything, and I made suggestions) with organizing everything in it, and it looks wonderful.

Right before I went on leave at work to have my gall bladder surgery, I gave my notice that I would be leaving Lakeview at the end of March. I had been approached by a fellow at church (whom I had worked with before at another job), to work for him as he was buying a plumbing and heating company from someone who was wanting to retire. So, starting April 1, I am the Office Manager for his company. The past couple weeks, however, I have been working on and off out of his office in the basement of his house, as the office space that is being rented, was being renovated, and we are finally moving into the office on Monday, May 11.

Grant is still working for the same security company on the same contract. Unfortunately, in the middle of February, his hours were cut from 8 hours a day, to 5 hours a day. There was no timeline given as to how long the reduced hours would be lasting, so we keep hoping that they will be increased soon.

In our spare time, we still both enjoy playing Buzztime Trivia. With the change in my work hours, I try to play on Tuesday and Friday evenings with the team, and then Grant and I usually head out on Saturday evening to play with whomever from the team shows up that night. (There are different Premium games on each night of the week.)

Recently, after dropping the car off at the shop to get saftied, I was crossing the street to get to the bus stop on the other side of the street, and was 2/3 of the way across, when suddenly a car appeared out of nowhere. The car and I ended up colliding, and I ended up on the ground. The driver did stop and helped me off the ground, and also gave me a ride to a bus stop a little further down the road. I did decide though, that I probably should get checked out instead of going to work. I went to Urgent Care at the local hospital, and nothing was broken, but I was very sore for a couple of days.

We are looking forward to having Mom and Dad here for supper on Saturday. Though, since we don't have a table yet, we are going table shopping this week.

I'll post an update to my goals soon.

Wedding

I know everyone has been waiting for a wedding blog. I was waiting until I had some pictures to add, and I got some today, so here it is.

Saturday went very well. All the planning paid off (thanks to everyone that helped with that). Everyone was where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be.

Grant looked great in his tux.

I think I looked good in my dress.

We were both very nervous throughout the ceremony (I cried while saying my vows). After we both relaxed, and had a great time.

I've added more picture to facebook, and if you follow this link, you can see more.

7 of 52

I realize that I'm a little late with this week's update.

We spent Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Saturday out at Selena and Curtis'. It's so great that they have a place big enough for everyone to gather together. Grant was there for as much as he could be, since he had to work. Great times were had by all. Presents were opened, food was eaten and games were played. Since Grant and I enjoy trivia so much, a game a of Trivial Pursuit just had to played. So Saturday afternoon, 6 of the 7 adults played. We played in teams/couples: Mom and Dad, Selena and Curtis, and Grant and I. We played for a couple of hours (until supper was ready). It was a close game, but at the end Grant and I were declared the winners since we had the most pies. For once I can finally say that I beat Dad in Trivial Pursuit.

We had a quiet New Year's. Grant had to work, and Charlotte and I head over to Rod and Linda's for supper and visiting since Rhonda was here as well. We had a great time visiting and left just before midnight (I didn't want to be on the road when everyone else was leaving there parties).

The biggest news of the week would have to be that I found actual wedding shoes. I had seen them at the mall on Sunday but they didn't have my size, so they phoned another store which did have my size. I was able to get over there on Tuesday and they fit and were WAY marked down. Even after paying the tax, I paid 86% less than the original price. I just love finding a bargain.

Grant and I wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.
